Making Music History Relevant

Musician and historian Laura Koenig received her Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Iowa as the first performer awarded the prestigious Iowa Fellowship. She holds additional music degrees from UCLA (summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and UC San Diego. As a specialist in baroque and contemporary music, Dr. Koenig has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, and Australia. In addition to serving as Artistic Director for the Anchorage Festival of Music since 2013 and director of AFM’s baroque series since 2008, Dr. Koenig directs Fair Weather Flutes (flute choir), coaches for Alaska Youth Orchestras, and teaches flute at UAA and her private studio. She also performs as principal flute with Anchorage Opera Orchestra and section flute with Anchorage Symphony Orchestra.

Karen retired (2018) from UAA Department of Music as Professor of jazz studies teaching all jazz combo, jazz ensemble classes, history of jazz, jazz theory and private piano.  She coordinated all UAA jazz activities and produced UAA Jazz Week for over 30 years.

In the past she has arranged, conducted as well as accompanied a wide variety of musicians and groups in Anchorage and Homer areas.
