My name is Hallie Chiu, and I am on the board of AKTA. My colleague and fellow AKTA board member Sara Anderholm and I are reaching out to you to invite you and your students to participate in a free public showcase concert happening on May 4th, 2019.
At the start of this year, Sara and I started a series of casual performances entitled “Neighborhood Performances” to give students ages 4-18 the opportunity to share their music in public spaces. Currently we have put on several shows at local coffee shops and assisted living homes, and we have received positive feedback from students, teachers, parents, and community members alike. We are now ready to tackle our first formal concert, and we hope you’ll join us! Below is our vision for future performances, and specifically our upcoming concert in May.
We believe Alaska suffers from a lack of non-competitive performance opportunities for musicians 18 and under. These public concerts are part of an effort to fill that void. We aim to bring the music community together to meet and support one another beyond the boundaries of private studios. Students meeting students, teachers meeting teachers, and parents meeting parents. We believe public performances bring communities together — and let’s face it, they’re also just fun.
We have big dreams, but we can’t do this without you — our fellow local music teachers! This is your time to shine and show off the accomplishments of your students. We also need you to help us find our audience. Invite your students, their families, their friends, your friends, your neighbors… you get the picture! This concert is free, and by putting on a phenomenal show, we are making good music more accessible to more people.
This is not a competition, or a standard recital, nor is it a good fit for every single student. Students are not ranked on judged on their performances, but those of us screening the entrants are looking for dedicated young musicians who have worked hard to prepare a piece of music they love. We’re looking for kids who love to perform, or at the very least feel brave enough to step out of their comfort zone. Most of the screening starts with you, because you know your students best. We hope you’ll bring us the students you believe are a good fit, and that you and the rest of your studio come and enjoy the show!
These concerts take place on the same day, at the same location! Please take note of the time slot for each one.
