8/5/2016 1:15–2:30 — The Young Beginner: Approaching the Piano Playfully

Jennifer Merry, presenter

What is the best age for a child to start piano lessons? If you have wondered about this question or have never felt totally at ease with young beginners, this program will help to generate ideas and tools for teaching this unique age-group. With a focus on beginners aged 5 and 6, this workshop touches on early-childhood approaches to music in general (Music Together and Kindermusik), as well as small-group “pre-piano” classes and private lessons at the very beginning stages of study. Group activities and games that are playful and age-appropriate will be covered. Also included are video clips of classes and lessons, as well as discussion of pedagogy and methods.
